Holy Week Devotional- DAY 5

When It Gets Hard (Day 5)

There’s a version of faith
that sounds strong… but isn’t very honest.

Like you’re supposed to always feel steady.
Always confident.
Always okay.

But that’s not what we see in Jesus.

The Garden Where Pressure Builds
In Luke 22:39–46, Jesus goes to a place called Gethsemane.
The name means oil press.

And that’s exactly what this moment feels like.
Pressure.
Weight.
Everything pressing in at once.

Jesus steps away from the others, falls to His knees, and prays:
“Father, if You are willing, take this cup from Me; yet not My will, but Yours be done.”

Not Easy. Not Polished. Real.
There’s nothing performative about this moment.

Jesus isn’t pretending this is easy.
He isn’t trying to sound strong.
He’s being honest.

Luke tells us His sweat fell like drops of blood,
a picture of deep, overwhelming anguish.

This isn’t calm.
This isn’t composed.
This is what it looks like when the weight is real.

The Choice Inside the Struggle
Here’s something important to notice:
Jesus didn’t want to go to the cross.
He chose to go.

Those are not the same thing.

Sometimes we quietly assume that obedience should feel simple;
clear, easy, almost automatic.

But this moment tells a different story.

Faith isn’t always light.
Sometimes it’s costly.
Sometimes it’s heavy.

Sometimes it sounds like:
“I don’t want this…
but I trust You.”

If You’re in That Place
If you’ve ever prayed something like that,
or even struggled to,
you’re not behind.

You’re not doing faith wrong.

You’re actually stepping into something real.

Because when your faith gets hard,
this is where you find Jesus.

In the tension.
In the wrestling.

In the honest prayer you’re not sure how to finish.

He’s already been here.
He already knows what it costs
to say, “not my will, but Yours.”

A Prayer You Don’t Have to Perfect
Father, there are things I haven’t surrendered yet.
I don’t want to pretend with You.
I don’t want to clean this up.
I’m not even sure I can fully say “Your will” yet…
but I want to get there.
Help me trust You.
Amen.

Take a Step Today
Take five quiet minutes today.
Don’t ask for anything.
Don’t try to sound spiritual.

Just be honest with God about one thing
you’re struggling to let go of.

No polished words needed.
Jesus didn’t use any in that garden.
